Five Ways to Customize Your Google+ Profile

You may not be as active on Google+ as you are on Facebook or Twitter, but if you have a career in marketing, advertising, social media or other web-related fields, maintaining a presence on Google+ may be important.

Social Media Examinerreports:

When you establish a presence on Google+, build relationships there and get endorsements on the content that you share through Google+, you increase your Google search ranking.

Sure, I wish more of my Facebook friends were active on Google+, but I also enjoy that it’s a much calmer place.   It’s also a great place to connect with other social media professionals who I wouldn’t necessarily “friend” on Facebook.  Today I’m sharing a short tutorial on five ways to customize your Google+ profile, including the cover photo space.

Five ways to customize your Google+ profile:

(all tips accessed via “view profile>edit profile)

  1. Keep your profile photo current, professional and inviting. To edit your profile photo, hover over the space and click “change profile photo”.
  2. Change your cover photo.  The default cover photo on Google+ at the moment is seen below – pretty generic.  To change the photo, click on “edit profile” and then hover over the generic cover photo space.  Then, click on “change cover photo”.  Take advantage of this space with a beautiful photo, much like you would on Facebook.  Personally, I don’t recommend placing a family photo in the cover photo space unless you are OK with the general public seeing the picture.  It’s up to you!
  3. Customize your “about” tab.  You can include a tagline, a general introduction, occupation, employment, education and more.  To edit your “about” tab, simply click on “edit profile” while on the “about” tab and then click the parts of the page you’d like to edit.
  4. Link to your other social spaces and web presences.  There is a section on the “about” tab that allows you to link to your blog, website, Twitter profile, Facebook page and more (called “other profiles” and “links”).
  5. Add photos and videos of your work.  There are photo and video tabs on your profile – take advantage of the space to showcase your best work!
Bonus tip: Auto-publish your blog posts to your Google+ page (via Hootsuite).  One great way to ensure you have some activity on Google+ is to auto-publish your blog posts in the space. This applies to Google+ pages (not profiles) at the moment.  Google+ pages are similar to Facebook pages, in that they represent your business or brand.  Kim shares a step-by-step tutorial on her blog here.
